i made a pillow! much thanks to my awesome fashion designer roommate who took a break from her finals to help me with one of mine, and gave me a crash course in using a sewing machine. oh, and who also let me use her sewing machine, iron, and thread.

pillow i made using custom fabric

i drew this modern toile-inspired pattern and got it printed on fabric.

modern toile pattern

here are some process photos, again with thanks to my roommate, who thought "this is too funny not to document" (i'm so challenged when it comes to crafty things):

i'm still coughing up feathers. but so worth it! love how it turned out. can't wait to make more stuff with my new sewing skillz.

below are some progress photos of one of the oil paintings i did from this past semester, along with the finished piece, titled "Sleepover" (done on my very first self-stretched canvas! prouda me) i've always preferred acrylic over oil paint, but after this class, it ain't all that bad

( ^ i started with a generally green palette and quickly switched to blue
once i realized that the green made it look like a bunch of girls laying in a swamp)

what to do

now that the semester is over and i'm not stressed out with thesis and projects 24/7 and can finally sleep and eat 3 meals a day again, i can't sleep and my stomach hurts and all this free time is making me homesick and i don't go home until thursday so i'm making christmas presents in crappy lighting and looking at art and of course i'm permanently crouched next to the space heater

with a little sculpey, paint, and glitter (of course), i made the witch's legs from the Wizard of Oz. and a little house as the usb cap!

 Tiny Crimes

When I wasn't forced to stand
nose to the corner wall–exiled
for a crime they could never prove I committed
    I ate lunch
at the table with the rest of the tiny felons.
I remember the day when
Teacher, the one with the laugh as big
as her bottom,
waddled over to where I sat
with my partners in pee-the-mat-during-naptime crime,
my peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich
stuck to every small finger,
and she painfully bent over, her flesh
billowing out in all directions,
and pulled down the elastic waist of my blue jeans
to reveal
my older brother's tighty whiteys
hanging loosely on my small hips.
She aimed a chubby finger at my seat, spewing
a vicious laugh from the foghorn of her mouth.
My secret flooded the classroom, each tiny head dissolving
into sticky laughing puddles.
   "Doesn't she own girl underpants?"
"Maybe she really has boy parts!"
I sat with guilty hands and burning cheeks
sifting my three and a half years of memories, quick as salt
    but heavy as sand,
silently making deals with the laughing devil.
I'll never forgive my Mom and
the washing machine
for failing me, and
I'll never pee the mat again
I swear–
I'll never pee the mat again

:) / ;(

nooo, such bittersweet news. i finished my thesis book today, which is a huge relief, but i also found out that Morran, the adorable danish-swedish farmdog who is the star of Studio Morran, a blog by artist Camilla Engman, has passed away. i'm so sad! i'm a huge dog person and i've totally fallen in love with Morran through Camilla's documenting of their adventures. but i'm so grateful that Camilla had the wonderful idea of doing the "Book of Morran" project when she found out Morran was ill. (to find out more about Camilla, Morran, the book, and see some of the wonderful contributions, click here. to see my contribution, click here) hopefully knowing how many people cared about Morran will help Camilla cope with the loss of her pal.

above is another illustration i did inspired by Morran. (i actually included the initial painting of just the dog in the image above in one of the pages of my thesis, so it kind of makes the fact that my book is finished a little sweeter, knowing that morran's memory is in it.)

all dogs most definitely go to heaven  <3

i'll post a bit more about my thesis project as soon as i can in the coming weeks. until then, hug and kiss and snuggle with your puppies! they'll always be your bff.

update 12/5: Camilla has finished the Morran Book! you can view the entire book here. you can also buy yourself or a friend a copy, absolutely all proceeds go to charity (i believe she chose the ASPCA, which helps animals!)
